Manali vs Shimla: Which Should You Pick?

Short answer

Pick Shimla for a shorter, easier trip with colonial charm and gentle sightseeing. Pick Manali for snow, adventure and bigger mountain views. If you have 6 nights or more, do both: Shimla on the way up and Manali for the rest.

Distance and travel time

From Delhi, Shimla is about 350 km (7 to 9 hours by road) and Manali about 540 km (11 to 14 hours). Shimla also has the Kalka–Shimla toy train, a UNESCO-listed heritage line. Manali is closer by air via Bhuntar airport near Kullu, but flights are limited and weather-dependent.

Snow

Both can get snow from late December to February. Manali's snow is more reliable because Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel area are higher. In Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda are the best bets for snow.

Things to do in Shimla

The Mall Road and the Ridge, Christ Church, Jakhu Temple, Kufri, the Viceregal Lodge and short drives to Chail or Naldehra. It is a walking town with a relaxed pace.

Things to do in Manali

Solang Valley (snow play, paragliding, ropeway), the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, Hadimba Temple, Old Manali cafés, Vashisht hot springs and day trips to Naggar or Kasol. Rohtang Pass needs a permit and is open roughly May to November.

Shimla suits families with seniors, short weekend trips and first-time hill travellers. Manali suits couples, friends and anyone who wants snow or activities. Honeymooners often choose Manali for the views and cosy cottages.

Combining both

A 6-night plan works well: 2 nights in Shimla, 4 in Manali, with a private cab from Chandigarh. The Shimla–Manali drive is about 7 to 8 hours via Kullu.
