The plan at a glance

Rishikesh (2 nights) → Mussoorie (2 nights), starting and ending at Dehradun (by air or the Shatabdi/Vande Bharat trains from Delhi). Spiritual and adventurous in Rishikesh, cool and relaxed in the hills.

Day 1: Dehradun to Rishikesh

About 1 hour from Dehradun airport. Walk across Ram Jhula, explore the cafés and attend the evening Ganga aarti at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat.

Day 2: Rishikesh

River rafting in the morning (the season usually runs from about September to June and pauses in the monsoon). In the afternoon, visit the Beatles Ashram, or try a yoga class. Families with younger children can skip rafting for a gentle walk along the river.

Day 3: Rishikesh to Mussoorie

About 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Check in and spend the evening on Mall Road and the Library Chowk end.

Day 4: Mussoorie

Kempty Falls in the morning before the crowds, the Gun Hill ropeway, Company Garden, and a quiet walk around Landour's Char Dukan and Lal Tibba viewpoint in the afternoon.

Day 5: Back to Dehradun

Stop at Sahastradhara or Robber's Cave on the way down if time allows, then fly or take the train back to Delhi.

Tips

Rishikesh is a vegetarian, alcohol-free town around the ghats. Weekends in Mussoorie are crowded; travel midweek if you can. From December to February, Mussoorie is cold and sometimes gets snow, which makes it popular for a winter weekend.
