Summer Holiday Destinations in India (May–June)

Short answer

Head for the hills. Kashmir, Manali and the Uttarakhand hill stations are cool and green in May and June, Ladakh opens up from late May, and Andaman is still good until the monsoon arrives around mid-May. These are also the busiest weeks of the year for family travel, so book by March.

Kashmir

Meadows in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, a houseboat on Dal Lake and snow still on the higher slopes. It is the most popular summer family trip in India; hotels and gondola tickets sell out early.

Manali and Shimla

Solang Valley activities, the Atal Tunnel drive to Sissu and cool evenings in Old Manali. Weekends are crowded and traffic around Manali can be heavy, so travel midweek if you can.

Ladakh

Flights to Leh run all year, and the high passes and lakes are open by late May or June. Rest for 36 to 48 hours in Leh before going higher.

Uttarakhand hill stations

Nainital, Mussoorie and Auli are close to Delhi and pleasant in summer. Rishikesh rafting runs until the monsoon starts, usually around late June.

Andaman before the rains

Early May is still good for beaches and diving; from about mid-May the monsoon brings rough seas and ferry delays.

Tips for the summer rush

Book hotels and transport by March for May–June travel. Pick fewer places and stay longer in each, and keep sightseeing for mornings, when roads are quieter.
