Weekend Getaways from Lucknow

Short answer

From Lucknow, Ayodhya is an easy day or overnight trip, Varanasi and Agra make good two-day breaks by road or train, Nainital is the closest hill station, Dudhwa offers a jungle stay, and Rishikesh suits a long weekend by overnight train. Travel times below are approximate and depend on traffic and the train you choose.

Ayodhya (about 2.5–3 hours)

The Ram temple, the ghats on the Saryu and the evening aarti. It works as a day trip or a single night, and gets very crowded on festival days.

Varanasi (about 5–6 hours)

The evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, a sunrise boat ride, the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the lanes of the old city. Fast trains make it an easy two-day trip.

Agra (about 4–5 hours by expressway)

The Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri on the way back. The Agra–Lucknow Expressway makes it a comfortable road trip. The Taj is closed on Fridays.

Nainital (about 7–8 hours)

Boating on Naini Lake, the Mall Road, Snow View point, and nearby lakes such as Bhimtal and Sattal. Add Jim Corbett for a jungle safari on a longer weekend.

Dudhwa National Park (about 5 hours)

Uttar Pradesh's best-known tiger reserve, with jeep safaris and forest stays; the park usually opens from mid-November to mid-June.

Rishikesh (overnight train)

An overnight train to Haridwar, then a short drive to Rishikesh for rafting (outside the monsoon), the Ganga aarti and cafés. Mussoorie is about 3 hours further.
